How PDFs actually work — compression, conversion and clean editing

Start here: which PDF tool for which job

PDF tasks split by the verb — combine, break apart, shrink, convert, or sign. Two tools often sound alike, so the right-hand column flags the one people grab by mistake. Pick a row, follow the link, and you're on the tool page in one hop:

Who this hub is for, and where to begin

Students and researchers merging chapters, freelancers signing contracts, office teams prepping documents to send, and anyone handling a document they'd rather not upload to a stranger's server — all land here. The common thread: the work is private, the task is one-off, and installing desktop software would be overkill.

New to it? Three starting points cover most needs. To assemble or reorder a document, begin with Merge PDF. To make a file small enough to email or upload, use Compress PDF. To fill in and return a form, go to Sign PDF. When a job needs several steps chained together — sign then merge, compress then convert — each linked tool hands its output straight to the next.

Want the reasoning underneath (when compression trades quality for size, why converting a scan to Word needs OCR first)? That depth lives on each tool's own page and in the PDF Learning Center hub — this page just gets you to the right door.

Frequently asked questions

  • Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. Every SnapToolz tool runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript and WebAssembly. Files are read locally, processed in memory, and the result is offered as a download. There is no backend.

  • Which PDF tasks does SnapToolz cover?

Most everyday PDF workflows: merging, splitting, compressing, rotating, page-organising, page extraction, page numbers, watermarking, cropping, repairing, unlocking, metadata editing, signing, plus PDF↔image, PDF↔Word and PDF↔Excel conversion.

  • Can I work with confidential PDFs?

Yes — that's exactly the use case SnapToolz is best at. Because every operation runs in your browser, NDAs, contracts, medical records and tax documents never leave your device.

  • How is this different from iLovePDF, Smallpdf and other online PDF tools?

Those tools upload your file, process it on their servers, and stream the result back to your browser. That round trip is what makes them slow on mobile, and what makes them privacy-unfriendly for sensitive documents. SnapToolz does the work directly in your browser via WebAssembly — no upload, no daily quota, no email signup, no watermark on the output. The trade-off: very large files (>200 MB) are constrained by your device's RAM rather than a server's.

  • Is there a file-size limit?

No artificial limit. Practical limits depend on your device's RAM. Modern laptops handle 200+ MB PDFs comfortably; older phones may struggle past ~50 MB on memory-hungry operations like compression.

  • Do you add a watermark to the output?

No. Outputs are clean — we never watermark, never alter, never inject anything into your PDFs. The whole site is free with no paid tier, no upsell, and no daily limit.

  • Is everything free?

Yes — every tool in this category and on the entire site is free with no sign-up, no daily limit, and no watermark.
