About Habit Tracker

Habit Tracker is a tiny daily-checkmarks tool with streak tracking. Add the habits you want to build — meditation, push-ups, reading, language practice — and tap once per day to log a successful day. Streaks (consecutive days completed) are highlighted so you can see momentum. Everything is saved offline in your browser's IndexedDB, with no account and no cloud sync — your behaviour data stays on your device.

How it works

  1. 1

    Add a habit

Tap 'New habit', type its name, and pick an icon or colour to make it visually distinctive in the grid.

  2. 2

    Check in daily

Tap today's cell for any habit to mark it done. The streak counter ticks up; missing a day resets it to zero.

  3. 3

    See your history

Each habit shows a calendar-style grid of the past weeks so you can spot patterns at a glance.

Streaks, and the cue-routine-reward loop underneath them

A habit tracker works on a mechanism older than any app: the habit loop of cue, routine, reward. A cue triggers the behaviour, the routine is the behaviour itself, and the reward tells your brain the loop is worth repeating. Checking off a tracker is a small but real reward — the visible mark and the growing streak give the loop its closing beat, which is why ticking a box feels disproportionately satisfying.

The streak is the engine. Seeing an unbroken chain of completed days creates a 'don't break the chain' motivation that's stronger than the value of any single day's action — you brush past resistance not because today matters much, but because you don't want to be the day that ends the run. That's a feature to harness, with one caveat covered below.

Why private, local tracking lowers the friction

  • No account, no setup, no notifications nagging you into a relationship with an app — you open it, tick the day, close it. Friction is the enemy of consistency, and there's almost none here.
  • Stored locally on your device, so your habits — which can be personal (health, sobriety, mood) — stay genuinely private. No social feed, no accountability partner you're performing for, just you and the chain.
  • The trade-off is the familiar one: local-only means no sync across devices, and clearing browser data clears your streaks. Decide your tracking device and stick to it.
  • It pairs naturally with the Pomodoro Timer for habits that are really daily focus sessions, and with the offline productivity setup guide.

Designing habits that actually stick

Make it realistic and make it small. The fastest way to kill a tracker is to load it with ten ambitious habits at once; you miss a few days, the chains break, and the guilt drives you off entirely. Start with one or two genuinely small behaviours — 'read one page', 'ten push-ups' — that are almost too easy to skip. A tiny habit done daily beats an ambitious one done thrice and abandoned, and small wins compound.

Anchor each habit to an existing cue rather than relying on memory: 'after I pour my morning coffee' is a far more reliable trigger than 'sometime today'. And hold the streak loosely — its strength is also its trap. One missed day is a data point, not a failure; the people who keep habits long-term are the ones who restart the day after a miss instead of treating a broken chain as permission to quit. The 'never miss twice' rule beats chasing a perfect, brittle streak. Keep the list of habits short enough that maintaining the tracker never becomes the chore, and lean on Tasks for one-off actions that aren't really habits at all.

Frequently asked questions about Habit Tracker

  • Where is my habit data stored?

In your browser's IndexedDB — local to this browser on this device. There's no cloud sync, no account, and no analytics. This is deliberate: behavioural data (what you do, when, how consistently) is sensitive, and the only person who needs to see it is you. Export to JSON for backup.

  • What counts as a 'streak'?

Consecutive calendar days completed, in your local timezone. A streak resets if you miss a full day. Some habit-tracking philosophies allow 'skip days' (e.g. weekends off) or a freeze pass — this tool keeps it simple: every day or it breaks.

  • Does it remind me?

There are no push notifications or scheduled reminders. The streak system relies on you opening the tool — pair it with a daily browser-bookmark or pin the tab to make it part of your routine. The lack of nags is intentional: external pressure tends to break habits faster than it builds them.
