Crop is a composition decision before it's a technical one
Cropping changes what the image is about. Tightening in on a subject removes dead space and forces the eye where you want it; the classic rule-of-thirds placement — subject on a third-line rather than dead centre — comes for free when you drag the frame deliberately instead of accepting the camera's framing. Leaving a little 'lead room' in the direction a person is facing or moving reads as natural; cropping hard against the nose reads as claustrophobic. None of this is about pixels. It's why a crop tool with a live frame beats automated centre-cropping for anything a human will look at closely.
The technical payoff is a side effect: removing the boring outer third of a photo also removes the bytes that encoded it, so a deliberate crop often shrinks the file as much as a compression pass would.
Aspect ratios that platforms actually expect

When to crop and when to resize instead
These get conflated constantly. Cropping removes pixels from the edges and changes the frame and usually the aspect ratio — you keep less of the picture at the same density. Resizing keeps the entire frame and changes the density — same picture, more or fewer pixels. If a photo is the wrong shape for a slot (a wide landscape going into a tall story), you crop. If it's the right shape but too large to upload, you resize. You frequently do both: crop to 4:5 for the composition, then resize the result to 1080px wide for the upload. Reaching for resize when you actually needed a crop produces a squashed image; squashing is almost never what you want, which is why aspect-lock stays on by default.
Mistakes that quietly ruin a crop
- Cropping too tight with no margin — platforms add their own UI overlays (captions, buttons, profile bubbles) on top of the bottom and side edges, so leave breathing room there.
- Cropping a small source and expecting it to fill a large frame — a crop can only ever make the image smaller, never add resolution; start from the highest-resolution original you have.
- Cropping before you know the destination ratio — recropping the same photo three times for three platforms loses a little each round if you crop from an already-cropped export rather than the original.
- Forgetting that cropping does not strip metadata — the GPS tag and camera serial ride along into the exported file, so run privacy-sensitive crops through Remove EXIF afterwards.

Which aspect ratio should I use for Instagram?
4:5 (portrait, 1080×1350) takes up the most feed real estate and ranks better in the algorithm. 1:1 (square, 1080×1080) is the classic feed format. 9:16 (1080×1920) is for Stories and Reels. Pick based on where the post lives.
Will the cropper change my image's pixel quality?
No — cropping is just selecting a subset of the existing pixels. There's no resampling. JPG export is lossy at the encoding step (configurable quality); PNG export is lossless.
