The image-macro format, and why it's always Impact

The top-text/bottom-text 'image macro' is a specific visual grammar that dates to mid-2000s forums: a captioned photo where the setup sits along the top edge and the punchline along the bottom, both in heavy white type. It reads instantly because the convention is so fixed — viewers don't have to decode the layout, only the joke. That's the whole point of a macro: a familiar template carrying a novel caption.

The near-universal font is Impact, set in all-caps with a black outline. It became the default for boringly practical reasons — Impact shipped with both Windows and macOS for decades, so it rendered identically on the machines people made memes on, and its ultra-bold condensed letterforms stay legible over busy photos. The black outline (or drop shadow) is what keeps white text readable whether it lands on a bright sky or a dark shadow.

Keeping text legible over any image

• Always outline or shadow the text. White-on-white is unreadable; the stroke is non-negotiable, not decoration. A 2-4px black outline handles almost any background.
• Break lines deliberately. Don't let a long caption wrap awkwardly across a face or a focal point — manual line breaks keep the words clear of the subject.
• Scale text to the image, not a fixed point size. A caption sized for a 1080px image looks like a postage stamp on a 320px feed thumbnail; size relative to width so it survives downscaling.

What a meme maker isn't — and a note on punching

This is an image-captioning tool, not a content licence. The funniest meme in the world is still built on someone's photograph, screenshot, or artwork, and 'it's a meme' is not a copyright defence in any jurisdiction. For anything public-facing or commercial, use images you own, have licensed, or that are genuinely in the public domain — the legal status of the underlying image doesn't change because you added Impact text to it.

And the obvious line: a tool that puts text on a picture of a real person is trivially turned into harassment, doxxing, or targeted abuse. Don't. Memes are a format for jokes and commentary, not for naming, shaming, or threatening individuals — most platforms remove that content fast and the legal exposure is real. Keep it punching at ideas, brands, and situations, not at people who didn't sign up to be the subject.
