Going from JPG to PNG isn't about making a file smaller — it's about making it editable. A JPG is a sealed, lossy snapshot: every time you re-save it, it degrades a little more, and it can't hold a transparent background. PNG fixes both. Convert only when PNG actually earns its size

PNG files are big — for a photograph, 5–10× the size of the JPG. So the honest first question isn't "how do I convert?" but "should I?". PNG pays for itself only when you need something JPG structurally can't give you: an alpha channel, or a lossless base for repeated editing. For a photo you're just going to view or upload, staying in JPG (or going the other way with PNG to JPG) is the right call. This table is the decision:

Converting a lossy JPG to PNG preserves exactly what's there — it cannot recover detail the JPG already discarded.

Knocking out a background: what alpha does and doesn't do

The most common reason to reach for this conversion is transparency — a logo or product photographed on plain white that now needs to float on a coloured page or another image. The converter turns one chosen colour into full transparency (alpha=0), which works cleanly when the background is genuinely flat and distinct from the subject.

Where it struggles is soft edges: JPEG compression smears the boundary between subject and background into a gradient of near-white pixels, so a single-colour knockout can leave a faint halo or a hard, jagged edge. For a logo on pure white this is invisible; for hair, fur, or a drop shadow over a busy background, a colour-key isn't enough and you want a proper background remover that works on the subject, not a single colour value. Convert to PNG first so the result can actually hold the transparency.

Why editors want PNG, not JPG

  • Every JPG save is lossy. Open, tweak, save, repeat — and JPEG re-compresses the whole frame each time, so text and edges accumulate blocky artefacts. PNG re-saves are identical to the last save, forever.
  • Layered work needs transparency. Compositing, overlays, watermarks and UI mockups all rely on an alpha channel JPG simply doesn't have.
  • Sharp-edged content survives. Screenshots, charts, line art and pixel art keep clean edges in PNG; JPEG's frequency-based compression is built for photographs and haloes hard lines.
  • Colour stays exact. PNG is a faithful base for print proofing and design hand-off where a shifted or re-compressed colour is a problem.

  • Will converting to PNG make my JPG look better?

    No — PNG is lossless, but it can't reconstruct detail the JPG already discarded. Think of it as locking in the current quality: nothing improves, but nothing degrades from here on, which is exactly what you want before editing.

  • How do I get a transparent background from a JPG?

    JPG can't store transparency at all, which is the whole reason to convert. Pick the background colour (usually white) to knock out — those pixels become alpha=0 in the PNG. For soft edges like hair or shadows, use the dedicated background remover after converting.

  • My PNG is huge — is that normal?

    Yes, expected. PNG stores every pixel exactly, so a converted photo runs 5–10× the JPG's size. That's the cost of lossless and transparency. If you don't need either, you probably shouldn't convert — keep the JPG.

  • Is PNG better for screenshots and diagrams?

    Much better. PNG keeps text and sharp lines crisp, while JPEG adds visible haloing around high-contrast edges. For anything with UI elements, charts, or fine text, PNG is the correct format.

  • Does converting to PNG re-compress or lose quality?

    No. The pixels from the JPG are copied into the PNG exactly — PNG's compression is lossless, so the output is identical to the decoded JPG. Every subsequent save stays identical too.

  • Does this work for HEIC photos from iPhone?
